my recommendation would be to buy the parts seperately, rather than pre-packaged.
When I got my last upgrade it cost me $AU1500, but I got the same amount of stuff that would have cost me $AU2500 if I bought it from a retail shop. Only problem is you have to put it together yourself, but you shouldn't have too much trouble as cases and mobo's usually come with instructions.

Eh I kidna need a new comp all together, this 1 has some funky shit like windows protection errors, and lines on the screen, and it wont let me demagitize or whatever..Thanks for yer opinions all, but I could really use some opinions on pentium 4, and the new amd, whatnot, thx much.

Don't buy intel. (pentium anything)
That's your first lesson in economy computer building.
AMD can outperform them, and amd costs less.
Video cards: If you can afford it, get a GeForce 3. Its gonna be around 250-300. If you can't, get a GeForce 2 (gts, pro, untilmate, etc... none of the mx400, 200 crap )
2's go for around 50-100
Sound? If it really matters, get a SBlive value. Has more power than most consumers will ever use for years, and costs around 30 bucks.
MB and ram: MB- jussy get one with no onboard anything. Make sure it can handle ddr, and 266 front side bus. anywhere between 80-130 bucks. Ram- Micron 256 or 512 of ddr. 40-50 bucks.
Hard drive- If you can afford, get 2 equal hard drives, 7200 rpm and get a raid option on you motherboard. Makes all yer loading quite a bit faster.
Sorta rambling. You'll get a million opinions, but there's mine.
EDIT-- And please, please.... use a 17 inch monitor at least. All this power needs a little space ;)

Nexes, try some new RAMs. Protection Errors often come from defect RAMs.
Id also buy the single parts and put it together myself. Its way lot cheaper than a full package. And never waste money on Intel hehe

Or think about how to spend the $750 you save by not buying an uber DELL:
From consumersearch:
• Dell Dimension 8200 2.0GHz P4 (*est. $2750)
>> Where to buy If you're a die-hard gamer or graphics pro, PC World calls the 8200, "one of the most highly engineered systems we've seen." With its 2.0GHz Pentium 4 processor, experts say that Intel can reclaim the clock-speed title over AMD's Athlon chips, but at a price premium—and most experts are sitting on the fence about whether the 2.0GHz P4 is worth it. Still, the new chipset especially shines in the feature-loaded Dell 8200, with a top-of-the-line NVIDIA GeForce3 video card, 256MB RDRAM, 60GB hard drive and a 19-inch monitor.
• Micron Millennia Max XP2 Athlon 1.4GHz (*est. $2000)
>> Where to buy This desktop is top-rated in its price class, being only a little slower than the Dell above, but significantly less expensive. Until recently, reviewers called the Micron Millennia Max the fastest PC in existence. And although the Dell Dimension has just surpassed it in speed, the 1.4GHz Athlon-powered Micron is still a screamer, coming close to the Dell's performance on business apps, but falling behind in multimedia tests. If you're willing to concede a few speed points on video performance, a nearly identically configured Micron will save you a bundle.

Actualy after re-reading your post Nexex i have to agree with Insidiouz a little. If you don't know a lot about computers (as you said) and have quite a lot of cash to spend it is probably better to buy a complete package. Although i'm not sure if the Dell is the best choice price/performance wise.
But, if you have anyone among your friends or family who can help you build (and tweak) a computer from seperatly chosen (and bought) parts i still think that can give you the best performance regardless of costs.

buying a dell is akin to pulling money out of your wallet, and lighting it on fire. and no one wants to do that.
when you buy a dell/compaq/whatever, YOU are paying for the nice comfy store, and that annoying salesperson. you pay for all the advertisements the companies produce, and you pay for usually low grade equipment, they cut corners on the bits most people dont notice in the advertisements. Yeah sure it may have a geforce2, they just have that its an mx in the fine print (ie many times shittier than a proper gf2), just like the monitor is usually a shitty brand, the dvd drive is a cheapy oem etc.
but hey if you people like paying for that shit, im not gonna stop ya :p

"Board Idiot"
Take his advice. I dare ya.
Sid- stand your ( daddy's ) comp against mine anyday. Let's compare benchmarks :p
We already talked about your misinterpretation of the phrase "white trash." You see, someone who is living at home with mommy and daddy, has 2 bastard children, is a stripper, and spends his free time smoking weed and playing video games is white trash. Sorry for the mixup. :D
Nexux:
Dell computer is the same friggin thing as buying a system of your own. Bottom line is you are paying them over 1,000.00 to put the legos in the holes, and they are using lower quality parts to do it. You see these 2500.00 systems with them talking about the 3d POWER! Look at the details. There is tnt2 card pushing that thing, and that is not exactly 3d power. Only the highest of the high-end dell systems have any hardware worth mentioning, and even then, they are charging you almost 3,000 or more for something I could buy for 1,000 at most.
You ever played with legos? You can make a computer too, then. There is a plethera of knowledge on the net.
For starters, whenever I get stumped I go to www.virtualdr.com. The forums are an excellent resource of info.

i take great satisfaction in building my own systems somtimes the ycost more than a cheap of the shelf one but they are always better and more relible becuse i only use the best componets i can afford at the time
right now i have a PIII (not celron) 933 asus P3v4x MB (its old but was really good in its day) a 19inch sony (love it )
the game thearter sound card yamaha 16x10x40 burner and a 16 dvd had a geforece 2 GTS video cad and 386 megs of memory
but today to make sure my system would be able to handle the new requirements of luciln i got a GF 3 Ti500 video card and another gig of memory (my MB handles 4gig btw)
i have a dsl conection and you know what i almost never have Lag issues even when 200+ people in a zone almost never go LD (except when verant does somthing) and my computer likly will be good for 2 to 3 years more of gaming before i have to consider replacing it withanythign new
and most of all i am very happy with it becuse i built it myself over a year ago

LIke I said, you mother fuckers are just too fucking poor to afford a brand new state of the art DEll. Why would anyone listen to Yaarii,he has a three year old piece of shit sitting on his desk. I buy a computer every 2 years, see what working does. Lets you enjoy the finest stuff in life. Mort I dont live with my parents,do we have to keep going over this,or are you retarded where it just doesn't sink in your skull. I live with my girlfriend, and my kids are with my ex girlfriend,so it all good. I get my visiting days, and my parents get their share also. So fuck off,at least I can say I had pussy. Now go put your cape on,and play your game, and beat off.

YOU LIVE WITH YOUR MOM YOU FUCKING LOSER. For someone your age, thats pathetic. You have no clue wtf you are talking about. If you did, you wold know that you can build a computer that runs better than any Dell, and would cost less. But again your ignorance, is larger than the lie you call your life.

1st off with Dell you do not pay for the store, they have no store and can nly order on-line. As for comparing your Dell against a micron and coming up with a $750 difference, well no shit, when you make a comp with a P4 2gig processor compared to an Atalon 1.4 + then of course you are going to have a price difference. Dell isn't the best choice to go for a computer, but it would probably be one of the wisest to develope for a somewhat un-savvy buyer. When you compare Dell with Compaq and HP though you just blowing goat chunks out your ear. :P
And btw, if you dont want to over spend on a Dell, all you have to do is make sure you configure the comp properly, such as this one....
http://ecomm.us.dell.com/dellstore/retrieve_emailed_cart.asp?cart_id=52AA10ED-416A-411E-B534-DE59B6D939B6
And Yaari, if you feel that Dell cheats you on components such as a graphics card you can actually pick up a phone and call them and say you would like your system without one due to having one already. They are pretty reasonable.
Until you learn more about the inner workings of a comp, i would suggest going with a pre packed model, spending the extra few hundred could be better then trying to put yours together and frying the MB and everything else along with it by mistake.
How many welfare checks did it take to buy your new com Yaari =P

Sure ya will.. You will zone 0.0005% faster, but lockup more, go ld more, and you paid 10X the money I did.
Look up the numbers. AMD 1.4 overclocked to 2.0 securely outperforms the new pentium, and even getting a good overclock cooler, it is still 500$ less.
Bottom line: All the experts agree that for the best performance per your gaming dollar, chose amd.
and ryk- I'll take my friend's amd 1.7 512 ddr, 7200 raid comp against yours anyday in a zoning contest. Lets make it velious, though. sometimes I don't even notice zoning in the old world :p
