View Full Version : More gay ram questions (BECAUSE MY OTHER THREAD TURNED INTO A BICKERFEST)

My gay HP manual tells me this about my ram:

"The motherboard contains 168-pin DIMM sockets; the exact number of sockets depends on which model you have. A DIMM is a dual-inline memory module. You can install these types of DIMMs in your system:

16 MB
32 MB
64 MB
128 MB

All installed memory modules must be 168-pin unbuffered SDRAM (synchronous dynamic random access memory) DIMMs, and compliant with the Intel® PC SDRAM Unbuffered DIMM Specification Revision 1.0. This specification covers both 66-MHz and 100-MHz SDRAM DIMMs"

So I can't install 256 sticks I don't think so I'm going to buy 2 128 sticks, or can I install 256 sticks and my HP manual is just stupid?

Can anyone link me to a good site to buy ram, with the specs my GAY MANUAL gave me?

Again, throw your computer away.

You can buy 2, 256 chips. You can't buy just one chip because you have dual-inline memory. 256 chips were probably not available at the time they wrote that manual. Look at mwave.com or buy.com. Or just go to Compusa, probably the same price with shipping fees.

http://www.crucial.com/store/listmodule.asp?module=SDRAM%2C+PC100&Package=168%2Dpin+DIMM

And I wouldn't buy a 256 stick unless your motherboard manual specifically said you could use them. Or you could try giving them a call~

And you don't have to buy 2 like Exivate said, dual inline has nothing to do with how many chips you have to put in.

If you only buy one stick of RAM just make sure that it is in the first RAM slot. *The one your original RAM is currently occupying* But yeah, if it doesn't specifically say that it can use 256+ sticks of RAM, then don't get them. LIke was stated in the previous thread, the incorrect RAM, or RAM that isn't installed right causes ALOT of problems when your system is running. Pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com) is also has good prices for parts, online. BUT, seein as you're so confused, I suggest you buy it from a store nearby so that you can actually talk to someone about it. *Some of them know what they are talking about, and half the time you just bring your stick of RAM in that you currently have, they look at it, say ,' oh this is what you need.' and hand you the box(es) with the correct RAM that you're looking for.*

Okay, do I need to buy anything that prevents static or something?

Thought you had to have 2 or they don't work, /shrug.

As for the static, make sure you don't put them in wearing shoes and or socks, make sure you are barefoot and do it on tile or something. Touch metal before you put them in, I have actually fried my computer from the static, most people like me, never thought it actually could happen.

I JUST INSTALLD A 128mb STICK AND IT WORKED OMG YES *ORGASM*

The hardest part was taking apart my ghetto tower, my manual had such a vague instruction to it. My comp only had 2 ram bays, so I'll probably go buy another 128mb stick. I bought mine from Circuit City, for 29.99. But it came with a $10 rebate ;/

I REALLY need a credit card :( I'll be back on EQ as soon as I get a new cdkey/buy some game cards ;(

My accts all got banned, lol. But I havnt played in over a year, so I am itching to get back and kill people.

I'm getting a GeForce 2 Pci (my comp dosnt have agp slot), and I know I wont get good performance with just ram sticks.

I'm on a 499 celeron (sigh), gonna be 256 ram, geforce 2 64 or something :/ Think eq wotn be laggy? I'm not going to install luclin ~

Seriously get a job for a week or two and buy a new comp, EQ runs like fucking shit on my 1500 mhz comp. But, I think that has to do with my 32 meg peice of shit video card.

Enjoy leveling up another character on EQ, can't imagine how fun that'll be :P

Ram is a huge performance increase, but granted the whole package is what is important. I am running a P3 500, 32 mb Diamond Viper 770, which doesnt have drivers so i use Riva TNT ones, and 768 mbs of ram, i can run Luclin with most models on and graphics turned up a fair notch and not run too bad (unless i get 2 people in the zone :\) If he is going from like 64 mbs to 256, he is gonna think God took over his machine.

post on this board when you get eq up and running again. I'll be happy to give you some items to start with. The laughter you've given me on this board alone is well worth giving up some gear.

64 MB video card runs just fine. I have a 466 amd PoS, with 391 MB of ram and a 64 MB geforce 2 chipset. I don't lag at all. *broadband connection* ... I downgraded my PC recently, but I play alot more now.

Dont over look in buying a new hard drive, That system prob came with a 4-10 g hard drive running at ata33 @ 5400 rpm, Get a new one running ata 66-100 ata @ 7200 rpm (or better but you will need a controller card for anything faster), this will make the data fly off the disk and load/Run much faster.

Hard drives are pretty cheap. Just make sure you get a good one, alot of knock - offs out there being sold and they burn out really easily. Also, the heatsinks that come with hard drives work better than most you can buy separately (9 times out of 10), so don't worry about that.
