Windows 2000 has removed DOS from the whole thing.

Anything beyond 98se pretty much got rid of it, as far as I know.

I made a MS-dos startup disk at one of my friends house and that made it startup in MS-DOS, but when i did format c: it said bad username or filename.

wtf is up with that~

Ms dos startup is not the same as having all of the exe files that go with dos.

You'll need to go a different route. Not sure what, though. I use 98se.

It's not supposed to start up in DOS mode, because Microsoft intentionally removed MS-DOS as an operating system to make Windows Run faster and use less retarded commands. I think you need to uninstall whatever operating system you have now including DOS and then try to install Windows XP. Mine worked fine on my computer, but it sounds like MS-DOS is keeping you from installing it because it's not supposed to be run with MS-DOS.

Euh you can still boot to the commandline and you can still create a rescue disk, at least i can (professional edition). Or just get a 'Startup disk' from some other system and use that.

One of your friends must have a Win9X computer, everyone has one somewhere. Then after you boot up just start "fdisk" and delete your partition and create a new one. Then you can format it
