View Full Version : was playing ultima online......

i was sorting through some old boxes full of computer shit and came across a free 2 month trial version of ultima online i had got in the mail some 2 or so years ago and was curious since id never played UO before and since most "old school" pk/pvp guilds came from UO apparently and still talk about superior pvp is there compared to all the new games i decided to see what it was like.

well first i found an online "pk guide" describing how to rob peopls houses, trick them into blowing themsevles up or poisoning themselves so you can rob their gear etc etc.

so armed with this leet knowledge i chose a server at random and logged in to atlantic.

i discovered i was "young" for a certain amount of time and could not do things like attack other people or steal from them etc until im not young anymore.

i wander around the area around yew down to the bandit fortress for the next day or so until ive got 80+ in tactics swords and anatomy with enough magery to recall with scrolls and shit, since this was to be a mere test character to feel things out before starting a real one i wasnt concerned with stats really.

whelp, my "young staus" wears off and discover i cant rob peoples houses or boats, seems they changed that a long time ago and now everything is locked down or secured in unpickable chests. ok that fucking sucks since thats one of the main things i wanted to do.

so i decide to go whack some people, hmm, i cant attack them, another wtf, seems im in the new "trammel" facet where all new players start by default and the only way to povp here is consensual guildwars, aka bluebiedom and i must find a moonstone and go to the "fellucia" facet to be able to kill people, so after killing a few dozen orcs i get a moonstone and transport myself to fellucia, now as i arrived there it looked like it was going to be sweet, there were bones, gravestones and puddles of blood EVERYWHERE, unfortunately this was mere decoration as i did not find another player for a good hour and he was in britain (the biggest city) with only 2 other people in the whole city, so im asking some questions about this and that when this other dude named "ludes" calls me a newb, so i attack him and to my surprise waste him in about 8 hits, he didnt even really do anything except run around in circles, perhaps he was on "ludes" or some shit? anyhow as soon as i killed him though a guard wasted me so i didnt get to take his shit, and in addition to that all my shit was gone when i got back lol =P

so i go buy a halberd and am running around in my underwear hittign anyone i can find which eventually amounted to the grand total of 4 people) i get 2 more kills and decide to try out stealing from peoples packs.

well i cant doi that of course because you have to join the thieves guild which has a host of special rules to make it a pain in the ass for people who want to steal from other players.

so i go to join the thieves guildbut cant because 1> my character is not old enough and i have a few murders to my credit from the people i PKed and people who have a murder cant be in the thieves guild, how retarded is that?

so, i went and took a greater explosion potion out of the bank i had bought from an alchemist the day before in trammel and went middle eastern on this dude who was banking and blew us both up then logged.

that concluded my UO experience, now my question is WHY THE FUCK CANT ANYONE ANYWHERE MAKE A DECENT PVP MMORPG AND KEEP IT THAT WAY!?!?

hell i didnt even give a shit about the 2d graphics, if the pvp was like what i thought it would be id be playing UO until something decent came out, but the made a new facet where 9 out of 10 people play that you cant pk them on, cant rob people, cant kill them randomly without making playing nearly impossible etc etc.

to date, the best pvp rpg ive played was legends of kesmai on gamestorm, worse graphics then UO but damn that game kicked ass.

in case you are wondering..........

yes this post was a pointless ramble.

yes i know that everyone else here likely already knew the status of UO and didnt need me to tell them.

Good post, thanks.

I have been toying with the idea of getting a new game, seeming as my computer is fried. UO always sorta seemed to have a bad vibe to it, but I was 'thinking' of trying it maybe..

Not now. :D

I moved from UO to Everquest when they started seriously ruining the PvP in the game. My accounts are still active actually, and i have a GM Rogue on both Catskills and Atlantic. It was fun to log on and play up until they did the Trammel/Felucca thing. After that the PvP side just literally became a ghost town.

PvP in UO was seriously unbalanced for awhile, and most of the negative PK Stereotypes and aversion to PvP that most companys(Like Verant) have, stem from the just how badly UO screwed it up. They went from PK's actually owning the *ENTIRE* server in the beginning(And i mean literally. PK guilds were the uber guilds) to running off every PK in the game. There is one server left in UO named Siege Perilous which is kind of there version of "Rallos Zek", you may wish to check it out. UO was a fun game for a long time, and if you can deal with the dated graphics(they dont bother me) its a nice alternative.

My favorite UO character was my "O.J Simpson" guy. I have him hair like O.J's, a similar look(Plain Clothes with nice shoes), and a Butcher Knife as a weapon. He would run around all across the game murdering any Blonde Haired female he could find, all the while "Searching for the Real Killers." ahh.. UO was fun.

LMFAO !!

You two should log in and PK together.

O.J. and the Unibomber

All you're missing is a Jeffrey Dahmer. Unfortuantely I doubt cannibalism is implemented, although that would be cool as hell.

Its cool that you scouted UO and posted the info. I wanted to give it a shot again one of these days, but apparently its no use.

I just loved UO and it will forever be the best MMORPG i played.

Darwoth did you give http://www.project-entropia.com a try? Its SF based but it has cool stuff.... Read the FAQ some and tell me what you think.

Taken from FAQ:

13.28 How will PK be handled in Project Entropia?
Pk-ing will be possible in certain areas such as special arenas in the cities and certain areas out in the wilderness.

13.29 Will Project Entropia allow PvP and the looting of uninsured corpses?
PvP will be possible in certain designated arenas within the cities as well as areas of the wilderness. The looting of uninsured corpses will also be possible which again underscores the importance of insuring valuable items.

UO was like the best game for such a long time....I didn't stop playing because EQ came out. Stopped playing because they made 600 new rules to why I can't just go fucking kill someone~

project entropia sounds gan to me.....

for one thing the pvp looks to be bluebified, arena and wilderness pvp? bleh, sound like DAOCs frontier pvp only watered down.

also the whole thing about the in game stuff you do and items/money you collect having real life monetary value sounds extremly complicated and destined to fail.

plus its a sci fi theme and sci fi sucks for me =P, pretty much any theme but sci fi works for me.

just wish SB would plop out.

in the meantime strategy games and wolfenstein are fun (the new map pack for wolfenstein simply OWNS, especially the tram map), been trying to find a place that has the old mythic FPS "magestorm" that aol used to charge 2 bucks an hour for and then gamestorm had it and was their most popular game, then legal bullshit over who stole the game from who got involved so they dropped it, then mothershipgames picked it up but apparently mothership games doesnt exist anymore..... anyway, man that game was awesome as hell, it was a wizard FPS where you had to research spells and shit and customize your dude with them and the more kill points you got the higher level your guy went which allowed you to get more powerful spells all set in a FPS where 3 teams would fight over control of mana pools dated graphics and controls but still an ownage game.

Am I the only one that thinks when I game has a pvp shard, server, what have you, they need to place a simple warning along these lines.

"This is a pvp server, typically that means that if something happens, you can roleplay revenge. However, there are quite a few people who simply want to play to kill you. If you're playing on this shard (orwhatever) and you don't like that fact, don't play here, because you'll die, and we won't care." <-cheer

If you want pvp on UO you basically have to play the Test Server. You can set your skills/stats to whatever you want there (normal skill/stat caps apply though), and you start with all the materials and reagents you'd need. Grab some from the bank and run outside and gank away.

I know you're saying "you can set your skills? how lame" but it's actually pretty fun. My sister still plays UO and she tought me all the changes to poison and shit that have occured since I sold all my shit for 2000 bucks and quit 2 years ago, and I logged on to Test Server with her and 4 friends and we tore shit up... it was fun for 5 or 6 hours, at which point we all died for the first time, and the sluts killed my horse, and was too tired to run around looking for a res and begging other murderers for reagents.

UO used to be the funnest game to pvp in /sigh.... didn't know they fucked it up that badly now... Energy Bolt owned.... having your own house and castle and vendors was badass... being able to have 100 in like swordsmanship, tactics, parry, spell resists, magery, and a couple others was badass heh... you were a warrior mage who could own people... till they changed that /sigh
VIKING SWORD! W()()T!

Actually, the funny shit about OSI (the company that makes UO) is they actually reverted to some of their old systems. For example:

- Remember when they disabled precasting? ie. the ability to cast a spell, equip a halberd, smack your opponent, disarm, then have the spell hit them? It was nerfed for a while but they changed it back to normal and it works again.

- Mage/warriors were nerfed so that they can only do 50% damage with melee if they're a high-skill mage. Not anymore, mage/warriors are just as effective now.

- Archery isn't gimp anymore.

UO still has a decent pvp system. The problem is there are a few things such as house item decay and Trammel that ruin it. So there's really no point in playing any server besides test center. When I'm really bored I still log on, since some random loser my sister is friends with pays for our account's monthlies.

<-- Former Dread lord Magus on nappy /giggle

I remeber if you got a house key and knew where the house was you could goto town on people I still remember the days of looting out houses /grin

Trammel totally ass raped the game pvp wise, PKing got shit to shit and then " Factions " came out this is when i side stepd out of the game it was totally killed when people would hang around the moon gates and just wait for someone and bang em if they could

The good old days of LL room fights and Hunting people in Shame /cry

That was fun till trammel raped the game

best pvp game ive played was Starcraft/Broodwar..

while its not a standard pvp game.. its designed to be player vs player (tho it does have an intricate single mission type option)

if you havnt played this game.. (most have) play it..

Yeah SC is the best i still play regularly my Probe recall is silly /grin

But UO wise thats just just clasic MMORPG PvP in its prime... SC and UO are apples and oranges tho...

starcraft brood war is the best PC game ever. back when that came out i was so addicted to it, and i still have it installed and play it once in awhile. you guys are missing out if you never played it. whats cool now is most of the people still playing it are really damn good which makes for more interesting games, you can't just mass zealots or zerglings and expect to win. me and a friend go on and try to beat people in embarassing ways, its hilarious..
