I subscribe to PC Gamer and this month they had a section entitled The State of The Online Union. Basically, just telling you what the fucks going on with the current MMORPGS(EQ) and upcoming MMORPGS. There are actually a TON of MMORPGs in the making and out now. But, most of them looked like bullshit. I.E. stupid shit like Matrix Online that just sells the name, and dumb games like "There".

Anyways, this one caught my eye the most, and Im very excited about this, even more so then WoW. This, to me, sounds like the game we are looking for.

Guild Wars:

This is from the Guild Wars FAQ at www.arena.net:

"What kind of game is Guild Wars?

Guild Wars is a competitive online role-playing game. Players can engage in cooperative group combat, in single player adventures, or in large head-to-head guild battles. Guild Wars is a mission-based game set in a stunning 3D fantasy world that offers full, integrated support for guilds. Because the team that is developing Guild Wars has had experience creating successful online game series such as Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo, the members are familiar with the complex issues surrounding online games, and are creating a game that's both easy to learn and compelling to play long term, and yet doesn’t require players to spend hundreds of hours slogging through the preparation just to get to the fun bits."

This is what Im digging the most:

"Can I be killed by other players?

While Guild Wars has player vs. player combat, you're in control: you can choose to join in competitive missions and receive acclaim for conquering other gamers, or you can reap the rewards of solo adventures or cooperative team missions with an entirely different set of challenges."

This is a persisent world by the way:

"Are characters persistent?

Yes, your character will continue from mission to mission, acquiring levels, items, skills and abilities. In addition, every character is stored on ArenaNet's servers, so no matter whether you play single player adventures, cooperative missions, or head-to-head battles, your character will be stored in a secure environment allowing you to log in to play from anywhere in the world."

The developer:

"Who is ArenaNet?

ArenaNet is a wholly owned subsidiary of NCsoft Corporation, and was founded in March 2000 by key members of the creative teams behind Blizzard’s game series Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo, as well as the Battle.net gaming network. You can get a lot of good information about the company at our website: www.arena.net. "

To me, this is the game were looking for, not WoW. WoW sounds like its going to be for bluebies. Guild Wars, I think, is what PvPers are looking for. I'm very excited about this game. Unfortunately, we got a wait: Doesnt get released until the middle of 2004. But if WoW doesnt turn out to be what we want, I have a feeling this one will.

And your idea that it will blow is based off what?

Because thats exactly what shadowbane said, and I was hyped up about shadowbane till i made beta, then i just wanted to shoot someone.

True, true, thats what shadowbane said. But look at shadowbane. Its an old, buggy peice of shit. Horribly outdated graphics, etc etc developed by some unknown developer. This game, Guild Wars, is being developed by members who worked with Blizzard on Starcraft, WC, etc..

Basically, if WoW ends up NOT having a PvP server im expecting Guild Wars would be the next "big thing" to expect(unless something else came out). I wish Blizzard would tell us more about what they think about a PvP server though, damnit.

Very nice, more promising

Yeah, it just might be, if Blizzard decides to make the coolest looking game gay by not having PVP.

But there is no monthly fee which people may think its a good idea but its not..
That means they are putting this crap together sticking it out there.. if it flies oh well if it sucks fuck it we made our money off the game sale. its not coming out till 2004 and from what it sounds like there is no open ended pvp either. Trust me it looks pretty but it will suck. I dont know why game makers think taking out all of there frustrating elements such as spawn camping will make it a better game. EQ is so damn successful because they make shit so hard to get you feel fucking proud to have it. If you could do your epic in one day no one would give a shit that you have it and neither would you. "We are trying to avoid unneccessary downtime, long vicous travel, " these elements are part of the games lore fucko's. These game makers suck taking all of this shit out of a RPG and thats why they fail. im getting frustrated.

<<<<<------ you can choose to join ------>>>> means consentual pvp mine as well play WoW

Sure you can CHOOSE, but it doesn't say "Yeah, you can go the bluebie way, and not ever have to worry about being PKed". Either way, now that I read the FAQ again, it is quite obscure on what their trying to convey. It could have two meanings to it. Blizzard and other game developers are the same way. You read a FAQ and it could mean this, or it could mean that; they cant tell it to you straight.

I agree with you on what game makers are doing these days, though. Taking the "hard" elements out of a game like camping shit, epics, etc make the game boring. If theres no challenge, it won't keep people interested. I mean, I thought Blizzard was trying to learn from EQ's mistakes. Making shit "hard" is not a mistake. Everquest wasn't exactly an easy game, you had to work at shit to get things. This is what drives people to play the game more and more. Now, if game makers could keep the same elements of EQ AND make PvP great, it would be perfect.

The idea of PvP though seems like its dying. Everything must be so fucking choosy. These days its like "Yeah, theres PvP in this game(no game in particular). But you can choose wether or not to enter into it".

That is NOT pvp. PvP is a fucking surprise. Getting jumped when your off guard. "Choosing PvP" is /dueling....

well ive been ranting and raving on their boards hoping to get something done and maybe even putting a bug in their ears...
we'll see what happens... i mean if they make the newb zones no pvp thats fine.. but if they make the high lvl xp and raid zones non pvp too i will be genuinely pissed.. therefore they should just not make it possible to finish quests or xp to the fullest without having to encounter pvp. if they do that ill play wow.

if everquest made a retro pvp server like it was before velious or even before luclin, with none of the AAs, extra uber overpowered items that require months and dozens of people to get, and stupidity soaked pvp destroying spells like manaburn and lifeburn that let retards like kronar and dempig actually kill people id be back in a second.

Exodus

Exactly, wtf did they make luclin/pop for anyway? we used to be able to compete with them until luclin/pop came out, then their advantage of being 50 years old and living in their parents basements actually came to their favor, as they could get all the "phat l33t loot" they wanted and keep us out because we actually work and have real lives.
