So which card would I be better off with? The Radeon is a little more expensive, and I have seen mixed reviews.....Both with 128 megs of DDR...

you mean radeon 9700 pro? then radeon, if its anything below 9700 get geforce 4..

without getting into specifics,

with radeon you usually get higher benchmarks, and the chipset is higher quality so if you wanted to you can overclock a little higher

4800 is a good card also, but just lacks FPS

Go to www.3dmark.com for all your video card questions. I'd go 9600 pro because you can overclock that bad boy really easy with some simple software.

btw you can find a 9600 pro on ebay for about 140 brand new.

Well is the 9500 better than the 9600? From prices it looks like it is...

The main difference between the 9500 Pro, and the 9500 is the number or rendering pipelines, half have been disabled in the 9500.

The main difference between the 9500 cards, and the 9700 cards is the bus width, 128 bit for 9500's, 256 bit for 9700's.

The difference between the 9700 Pro, and the 9700 is clockspeed. The 9700 is made by third party manufacturers.

All are based on the R300 chipset (this is probably why they can all use the FireGL drivers) and have DDR.

but heres why you would want to go with 9600 (unless you can afford 9700 pro) instead...

The 9600 uses the Rv350 chipset which is a heavily modified R300 chip, the clockspeed increased, the memory interface and Hyper-Z optimized, the number of pipelines halved, using a 0.13µm process.

so in short, it's *very* easy and safe to overclock... which is the case in all radeon's, but the 9600 chip design is based around overclocking, but make sure it's properly cooled.
