Ok folks I was on blue servers in EQ and never played pvp. While we might or might not get PvP in WoW I was wondering if anyone had good ideas on pvp. Of course we will have to base it on EQ experiences but i can relate to that so any tips from that would be cool and something to base wow on if pvp is in it.

Not really an idea, but more of a tip. Gray and I learned (which is probably the most important thing in pvp )since Ultima Online to NEVER EVER fight a person that attacks you first, or a group that attacks you first, unless you are absolutely 100% positive you will kill them.

Being a pvper, you should always start off with the first spell or first stab.

But, being pessimistic I don't think there is going to be very good pvp in WoW or any at all.

My advice is to cheat, anyway you can, even if it isn't Godmode, look for a good macro scripter, almost every game (especially RPG's with tradeskills) have some quest, or item that can be done over and over so you can sleep while you level\get rich, and PVP while your actually at your PC. Look in cfg files for annoying "blind effects" you can turn off etc etc.

Secondly, turn off annoying shit, you don't need the o0 graphics, you need crazy framerates in clusterfuck situations. (Compnents are cheap as hell now, build your own gaming rig, or contact Zotics, if I remeber correctly he gets Gateways at 60% discount or something, just make sure it has an AGP slot)

Thirdly, even if it's not Quake, get good Macro keys going, and practice memorizing them. Also get a good optical mouse and a good pad. I have a really slick glass one made by Mouse Bungee. (I think ww.everglide.com sells them). Or get a www.ratpadz.com mousepad.

Fourthy, don't talk shit in the game, do it on boards with screenshots.

Fifthly, get in Beta. This allows you to dominate for the first month and beyond. While everyone else is still learning your out killing. Beta play is how lengends are made.

Sixthly, get multiple accounts, it's only an extra $15 bucks a month and yes, it makes a HUGE difference.

And last but not least, remember it's only a fucking game.

why multiple accounts?

I personally only have one computer atm, and rarely have enough time to play more then 1 character much less a whole accounts worth. Sure eventually all the slots get filled up, but I doubt it would be worthwhile for me to get an extra account.

And I wish i had known about that blind thing a few years ago(if it works in eq) I hated blind so very, much. But it was oh so satisfying zapping someone with it :D

Exivate said one of the most important rules ever.

Often in PvP (with DB anyhow) you are SURPRISED. Meaning you are getting what we called "jumped". This is when you are doin a mob for experience or loot and a person or persons attacks you. The rule is if you try to fight back you will 90% of the time lose. And here is why:

1. The attacker already knows he has the advantage and would not have attacked otherwise.

2. The attacker is full buffed and prepped for battle.

3. The attacker got first attack off.

All of these point to doing the smart thing: Escaping. Ignore their barbs of "pussy", "faggot", "wimp" ect and buff/prep/call for freinds, then go work them over like a 2 dollar whore.

This has been a primary rule of DB for ages and is the reason we held whatever zones we wanted for ourselves. We always bound in secret safe places in the zone and we NEVER EVER killed mobs with enemies in the zone. We always just concentrated on killing the foes...however we could. Sometimes even if there was 30 of 40 foes and only a couple of us...we would stay in the zone just to make them nervous and not like being there. We would kill any that broke off from the group and train them. If we died, we were bound there so it was no big deal.

Another key is communication and the ability to work together. Whnever a DBer needed help in PvP, ever DBer came to help. There are some exceptions and these will be outlined in the charter when it's done (like events...we are not gonna stop killing a god for some dipshit who did not want to come and is getting bind camped).

Having a good heart also is important. The best thing about RPG PvP is that folks get SOOOOOOOOO angry when they get smoked and provide us with great entertainment afterward (and pictures hehe). The key is for US not to fall into this same catagory. Don't get mad when you get killed. Just figure out how to switch the roles.

TEAMSPEAK will be our best tool. We will use Teamspeak and it will help us do VERY well.

MESSAGE boards. Our private board will be a great source for info on tricks and stuff to do all kinds of things...especially killin' folks.

Until we know more about WoW pvp specifically, this is about as much as I have :)

1. Always keep yourself buffed with speed (sow in EQ) and resist/hp buffs if theres even a chance you can be attacked.

2. do /who ALOT. Like they say in GI Joe - "knowing is half the battle"

3. If hunting, sometimes its ok to just be a distraction if you're a sturdy class (healer). I don't know how many times I engaged people and got them focused on me while gray and rykker came in from the sides and dropped the hammer on em.

4. EVERY class can pvp somehow, you just have to find a way to help. Just because you arent a massive damage class doesnt mean you cant chalk up kills. I raked in over 1,000 pvp kills prolly over 400 solo in my 18ish months pvping on my druid and being a healer with sow/soc and gate allowed me to end my pvp career with @7 deaths (fuck tstaffs ok?). 1000W7L not a bad track record.

Although Holiart's info is entertaining (and true :P), I like to play within the game's parameters without taking some legal, but questionable shortcuts.

Basically, for those of us who have played multiple games throughout the years (i.e. NwN, EQ, DSO, UO, Island of Kesmai, SB), no advice can truly be given for any game until that game comes out. Each game is different and has different parameters to play by. For instance, some games require groups to successfully PvP (Shadowbane) while in some games you can successfully PK solo or kill in groups (EQ or UO). Some games require hand/eye skill for PvP (PS) and some require nothing more than the right character class versus the wrong class (EQ).

Basically, two key pieces of advice from Holiart ring true in any PvP game that I've been involved with -

(1) Don't talk shit in game unless you REALLY know what you're doing - screenshots can be pieced together to make you look like a whiner and the best killers speak very little in game. Do the shittalking on your own terms on the message boards

(2) Get into beta and learn how to play your character. I've killed so many idiots who don't known the basics. People will catch up quickly, but you can do a lot of damage before they figure out how to fight back successfully. Hell, in Shadowbane, several guilds from beta dominated for nearly 3-4 months before everyone else figured out how to play - then the dominating guilds left the game because they don't like competition.

You'll do fine bro - you've already shown that you have the head for tactics and killing, in PS....

My mentality on PVP

I have a few rules which I follow:

1. Be Aware
A. Be aware of your surroundings - Always keep in mind things surrouding you, Portals, mobs, gate spots, bind points. Anything that can be potentially alter the pvp battle in or against your favor. Be aware of escape routes and places people could appear.
-One example was the water 'trick' in Everquest, or mob locations that agro me. Find out where you can and can't go, because in the heat of battle, you don't have time to worry about that. Fore thought is as much about pvp as the actual battle.
-Another tactic I would use was CONSTANTLY checking the zone lists (About every 1 minute. And especially before conducting PVE.) (like Druiddegenerate said.)

B. Be aware of your opponents. Find out your opponents weaknesses related to their gear, class, skills, or whatever may be current within the game. Sometimes knowing that someone is naked clues me off that I may have a high AC or MR than them. However, do not underestimate your enemy.
-Knowing that Harmtouch could kill just about anyone, or sitting casters were weak against heavy hitting tanks was nice when dealing with people.
-Often times hearing just footsteps around me in Eq, when we still had to stare out the spellbook to med, saved me more times than I can remember.
-Knowing that an enchanter had devestating AE Direct Damage spells was a helpful incentive to not sit in clusters while in downtime.

C. Be aware of yourself. Find out your weaknesses with your class and yourself as a player. Find out how to kill yourself, and fix the problem, or atleast be aware of it. If you can figure it out, then I guarantee someone else can, and will.
-Be aware of your character's interface, setup Hotkey lists that you can switch to without a second's worth of thought. Memorizing your hotkey list can increase your split second strategy. When the game comes down to milliseconds, the less you waste the better.

Like Gray said, people that attack you USUALLY have reason to believe they can kill you. But occasionally, that first shot can kill you immediately. Finding every possible way to circumvent that first shop can greatly increase your life expectancy.

Occasionally your opponent will attack you, and underestimate you. But those occurrances are rare. Don't count on it too often. If you want to play to win, then play on your terms, with your rules of engagement, not their's.

Do not hesitate to do things to get an advantage. Who cares if its cheap? If its not going to get your ass banned, fuckin' do it. The people that plead an action not being fair are the people that got their ass kicked. Don't take advice from the loser. As Malignancy said, when you fight the messageboard battles, fight them with information, not morals. Screenshots can be BS'd, but often times numbers can tell the truth. I play by the rules, but the rules do not include tactics that are cheap. Example: The forementioned water bug. It wasn't illegal, but a lot of people did not respect the usage of it. . . and I did not care. . .

Use heights to your advantage.. hehe. In EQ I used to levitate all the time, it was the smart thing to do if you were going against melee's. then the funny part was when the tanks called you a pussy/coward for doing it lol

You posted this a while ago but the best advice I can give anyone interested in PvP is

Unless you're sure you can get away (Zone very close, or you play a speed enhanced class *bard* for example), Never and I mean *NEVER* run.

That's what they expect you to do and are praying for that "easy kill"

Turn around and beat the piss out of them. Depending on your class you should never consider running anyway.

Besides most of the pukes you kill will stand there for 20 min debating if they should attack you anyway. Hands shaking and shit (someone told me this lol) so when you turn around and start to stomp them "Menace to Society" style, they either haul ass or they'll die because they suck.

Keep a chip on your shoulder and if someone so much as coughs on it. Sodomize that mofo with your sword

Always, and i mean always have a backup plan just in case shit goes south on you because sometimes you can underestimate another player and he can turn the table on you so just have a back up plan ready just in case. To eliminate this dont be so worried about racking up kills for yourself and PK with a group there is safety in numbers, if you happen to be the guy that gets the kill well then its golden but if not least you had fun taking part in ganking:P
