Maules post had a link to an interview with Richard Garrison, the man behind Ultima Online. People who did'nt play UO from day one would'nt understand what this means, but if there are any other oldschoolers out here, you will enjoy this quote taken from the article:

Players also tested their blades on each other. A few people had already complained about rampant player-killing in the pre-alpha test. Now the world turned truly murderous. New players were dispensed with almost immediately after logging on, and god forbid a relative amateur track down some valuable magic sword or expensive treasure. That unlucky character wouldn't last two hours in Ultima Online before marauders would murder the unsuspecting victim and take his or her possessions. Even Richard's supposedly invulnerable Lord British was killed as he addressed his subjects near the end of the beta test after neglecting to turn on his invulnerability mechanism.

God, looking back on those days, killing people that just opened their accounts, forcing them to seriously reconsider playing the game brings tears to my eyes.

Omg wtf, this interview is FULL of things that bring back memories. If you dont know UO, this quote sums up everything UO was:

Nevertheless, enough genuine role-players were involved to give the world its own distinct character quite quickly. It was one of these players who ultimately illustrated for Richard just how much independence from him the players had established. He was walking through the streets of his world one evening and he heard a woman screaming. Feeling benevolent, Richard's Lord British decided to go help her. When he asked her what happened, she said that somebody had come running by her and stolen all her possessions, moving so quickly that the thief had barely been perceptible. Bemused, Richard explained that stealing was part of the game, but that he'd help the woman get her property back. The thief had programmed a series of automatic commands into his computer, running and stealing with a single keyboard click that made it almost impossible to guard against, Richard surmised. He transported himself immediately to the thief's side, stuck him with a freeze spell, and told him not to steal from the woman anymore.

"Yes sir," came the reply from the thief, who returned the belongings.

Richard teleported back to the woman, and returned her belongings. While he was wishing her well, a blur came by and took her things a second time. Stunned, Richard froze the thief again.

"Hey, I just told you not to do that," Richard said. "What are you doing?"

"Sorry, I won't do it again," the player said sheepishly, once again returning the belongings.

"If you do that again, I'm going to ban you from the game."

"No problem."

Richard blinked back to where the woman was standing, once again returning her belongings.

"No problem. You won't have any more trouble with --"

Zip. A blur flashed across the screen, and again, the woman's possessions were gone.

"Damn it," Richard thought, leaping to the thief and freezing him. "I said I was going to ban you, and now I have to," he said. "What's wrong with you? I told you not to steal from that woman." He was furious, and ready to throw this player out of the game. He was Lord British, after all, and this guy was breaking the rules.

"Listen," the thief said, breaking character for the first time. "You created this world, and I'm a thief. I steal. That's what I do, and now you are going to ban me from the game for playing the role I'm supposed to play? I lied to you before because I'm a thief. The king caught me and told me not to steal. What am I going to do, tell you that as soon as you turn around I'm going to steal again? No. I'm going to lie."

To arms! Richard was taken aback. The thief was right. Ultima wasn't his anymore, and it wasn't right for him to try to control its population. To a large extent, players in earlier games had been puppets playing roles nearly as clearly defined as the computer-generated characters. The hero hunted the villian. There was a right way and wrong way through the games, and Richard had controlled all of it as designer. But not here. Here the players had free will; they had control over their own environment and destiny. The puppets had cut their strings and taken over their world.

So Richard, a deposed god, let the thief go.

Free pvp oriented player run uo shard just went up yesterday in case you are bored waiting for wow and feeling nostalgic. It feels like an authentic osi shard except for a little to much macroing atm since the server is brand new. 389 players on atm.
http://www.wtfman.com/shard/

also see wtfman.com for some uo movies

You guys are probably pretty well set then. If you are interested in a fresh start though, the server just went up yesterday. I have always enjoyed the start of new pvp servers.

Metropolis started barely a month ago.. we have been on for a few days. reason we chose Metro was due to the owner of the shard being one of our fairly good friends.

i read the FAQ on the WTFman shard and it did not impress me.

LOL, I remember hearing about that when playing on Baja.
Didn't they supposedly ban that guys account and a few others?

Brings back memories of having Dragons "stored" in our keep and held in a corner of the wall by chests and macro'ing up spells casting and resistance each night until a GM would come by and remove the "pet" eventually.
