Is the gaming industry really turning into a carebear hugfest? Pretty much imho, yes.
When I bought Ultima Online back when you were just a kid, I was so excited with this genre that I almost had sex with myself . A genre where you can kill and bother thousands of retards from all over the world. I thought to myself ”Stoffer, this type of game is the mother of asswhooping”. Turns out I was wrong.
90% of the new games are either pvp free or so restricted that enjoying them is impossible. But sadly, there is no doubt that the market loves the treadmill type games, attracting mindless losers, who tremble at the thought of a real challenge. Because lets face it, why trouble yourself with real life when you can kill 52354235 frogloks and attain lvl 665.
Then, of course, there is the last 10%. Now, you’re of course thinking: ”Stoffer you silly dane, you cant play a percentage”. I slap you and tell you to shut up, because im not done talking. So which games am I talking about? Well, one very popular, and the one we are gearing for, is WoW. Lately there has been A LOT of positive pvp news. Hell, it actually seems like we will get more than one pvp server, and with different rules. This is of course, as the young people say today, ”totally teh r0x”.
But really looking forward to a game does’nt mean you close your eyes to the rest of the market. One of the things that gets me just as excited as sex and junkfood, is Darkfall. This is a game that is made PURELY for pvp.
Take this piece of information from the FAQ:
Q - Is Darkfall a Player vs. Player (PvP) game?
A - Calling Darkfall a PvP game would be selling it short. Of course there’s going to be a lot of PvP combat and the combat gameplay will be as fast paced and fun as a first person shooter, but the focus of the game is kingdom building, clan warfare, and conquest. The battles will be epic and will require a lot more than just PvP skill to be won. Darkfall is as much a social, a real-time strategy, and a role playing game, as it is a PvP game.
Q - Will you offer a world without PvP for those of us that do not enjoy it?
A - We like to think of Darkfall as a game where there are no restrictions to player interaction that don’t make sense. The fantasy literature and mythology that inspired fantasy based RPGs contains a lot of combat and warfare and it’s part of what made these worlds so dramatic, the characters so heroic, and the endings so rewarding. Having said that, we’re sorry but we cannot offer a “soft” version of Darkfall.
Q - How are you going to handle Player Killing?
A - Anyone can attack anyone. In fact we encourage you to seek out and kill enemies of your race and your clan. However, it is up to each kingdom to set the rules of their borders. The different kingdoms have NPC guards that have orders given to them by the player kings and lords. You can order the guards to attack on sight. The guard “hit list” can include clan names, individual player names, specific races, alignments, and enemies.
Sound sweet as candy? You bet it does. Check it out at http://www.darkfallonline.com and now, before you go look at Darkfall, let me share some personal dissapointments.
Warhammer online, inspired by a boardgame, where it is my impression that one or more armies line up only to wreck total havoc and destruction on each other. Guess what? A game which solely revolves around destroying each other won’t have pvp. They even had the nerve to write something like ”We know how frustrating random pking can be” in their FAQ.
Ultima X which was supposed to be Ultima Online 2, now referred to as a ”sister project” and not sequel. Had I fucked up UO like they did, I probably would have chosen ”sister project” as well instead of sequel. Anyway, the tie between the old uo that bred and raised many "griefers" (myself included) has nothing to do with the lame version out now, and certainly not with UOX. To be honest, UOX looks like the most boring carebear fest of all time. Allthought I knew OSI used more money on prostitutes and drugs then actual game development, I would have hoped they would have at least given pvpers just a little piece of the cake. I was, of course, proved wrong and my fear that retarded children are running this project, is confirmed.
AH well, who cares anyway. WoW is guaranteed to be out sometime before our grandchildren die, and Darkfall has some potential. Meanwhile, im on The Fallen (a new EQ PvP server that is pretty interesting) where a good deal of us started last night and are having quite a bit of fun. Talk about hard core, when you die on this server you lose all your shit and are reset to level 1! Ouch! Gonna be some serious pics from this hehe. One thing I wish they would consider is a faction based server under this ruleset. FFA PvP sever works out well as the player base begins to take the easy route and avoid PvP labelling anyone who does (the minority) as PKers.
