Are YOUR PM's secure?

It has come to my attention that some people believe their PMs on the site are not secure. More specifically, they believe I can read them.

This, I can assure you, is not true. I have tried :) In fact, the ONLY way I can see your PMs is if I change your PW and login to your account. You would be aware of this, however, as your old PW would not work. Additionally, there is no way for me to see your current PW to reset it or use it.

Anyone who admins a VB board will be able to comfirm this so it is pointless for me to lie about it. The ONLY thing I can do is delete the mail in your inbox. It's the only option I am given.

Sure, there might be some scripts that allow me to fuck with it, but we do not use these (nor do i even know about them). and to be honest, I would not want to use a forum script that allowed the admins to read private mails anyhow as it would create a shitty atmostphere for the members.

erm, given the fact that you as an admin can get the passwords for people who lose them it is a simple matter of using their login and pw.

dont really care as people should not use pms for anything they care about anyway, but rather emails. however thats false that you can not log into others accounts and such with their information that you as an admin have access to.

i cannot get your PW. If yer PW was "graysuckscock" i would never know and I could never know it. All I can do is set a NEW PW for your account if you lose yours. If I did this, then yes, I could login to your account, but folks would know something was up if suddenly they had a new PW.

Has yer PW been changed? No? then no one has read yer PMs.

The truth is ... with php, once a pw is selected for you, it is encrypted in and stored in the database in such a way that it can only be verified by the scripts. Gray is correct when he says that he can only reset the pw, and you would indeed know if your pw was reset. My suggestion is if you guys feel so insecure about utilizing the boards' pms then just send an e-mail.

Passwords are not stored cleartext but as an md5 hash. My password for example is stored as 'fa8dfa34a7e97cb1baa60df1f533645d'. This is also the reason you cannot just get your current password but have a new one generated when you retrieve it. So in order for Grayrage to get your password, he would have to generate a new one, which would not go unnoticed by you offcourse, because you cannot log on anymore.
Anyway, as stated before if you do feel insecure using PM's you should use regular e-mail, which is read by your isp's system administrator. /sigh
