What does it take to be a winner?
It struck me that there are several kinds of guilds. Generally speaking there would be 4:
1. The guild that has been together for one game and accomplished nothing.
2. The guild that was made in one game, did really well but were unable to make the transition to the next game.
3. The guild that has been around for several games without notable success.
4. The guild that has been around for several games with much success.
Now, Darkenbane fits into category 4. We have been around for a long time, and we have impacted every server or game we participated in. But what’s the difference between a type 4 guild and the other 3? What makes it possible?
• We function well socially. No one is here because this is a stepping stone to ”t3h l33t c4r3b34r cr3w able to raid ubar m0bs”, they are here to stay. That means that people are here to have fun without an alterior motive.
• We share a common set of universal values. Blue guilds have fallen apart from moving games because the group values changed. Let’s say you play a blue server on EQ and you have a guild that’s really ”good” at raiding. You move your guild to DaoC which has some pvp and that, all though limited pvp, displeases some members. We on the other hand are pvpers, which is not subject to change. Many of us have been murdering players for a little more than half a decade, and that’s not subject to change. In other words, fundamental changes to the guild values are not likely to occur.
• A good setting. Our homepage is by far the most advanced guild homepage on the internet, and we have a leadership which puts countless hours into improvements.
• Renewing our roster. People get married, have children and quit gaming for various reasons. Some guilds blindly believe that the old members are the best and refuse to let people into the guild. No guilds can survive on the same roster for very many years. We don’t have the same roster we did when we started, but that's a natural part of gaming. Do we miss the old people that we lost over the years? Of course we do, but we have also understood the need to let people step up and take over. The members we picked up from planetside and Discord for example, is clear proof that this philosophy is a success.
• Active forums (sigh). The attention our guild has created means that we have a lot of people checking our homepage every day (you wouldn’t believe our daily hits even if I told you), not only to get updates about the guild, but also to fight it out on our forums. Not only do our members use our forums, but many non members also post frequently.
• We are in the absolute top of our field. We are undeniably at the absolute top of the gaming pvp community. I'm not going to say the best, because there are many good guilds out there, but we are in the leading pool.
If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?
