Runs pretty lagless on my 2.2ghz p4 1gb ddr ram 128mbATI9600xt
I have it and love it, but I'm an ID fanboy.
I have an AMD XP 1700, 1Gig SD 133 RAM and Geforce 3 ti 500 and it runs at about 10-15 frames with everything on low. So... looks like crap, but playable, which makes me happy :)

amd 2800+, geforce fx 5700 ultra and I run doom 3 in 800x600 with high quality settings.
If you want to see what you can play doom 3 at I strongly sugest you visit www.hardocp.com and read the doom 3 hardware guide right at the top. Look for your processor speed then look for a graphics card thats near yours (they have about 100 different computer configurations tested) Ethier way, even at low quality this game looks really nice.

If you want to increase your performance you should also unpack that .pak files (use winrar or whatever).

To increase your performance in Doom 3 read the following tips:
1.
In your DOOM 3 directory, find "DoomConfig.cfg" (x:\Program Files\Doom 3\base). Open DoomConfig.cfg in Notepad.
Find the line:
seta image_cacheMegs "32"
After setting it to 128 the frame rate went up a LOT... I can even run it on the high settings now... I'm going to increase it to 256 and play some more. I'll update w/ problems if they arise.

256 was an even bigger boost. the game is running real good now. I'm gonna up the ante a bit more and try it at 384.

I got brave and set it to 512mb... I dont think there were any huge frame increases... but a small amount. I don't think i'll go any further unless i get feedback from others who have tried it.
2. Use Catalyst 4.9: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/wxp-w2k-DOOM-HOTFIX-8-05-040727a-017086E.exe
3. As all of you who allready have this game recognized the game is very slow even on new Computers.
I found out the reason for this and the solution to fix this problem.
As you already know after installation the game consits only of the doom3.exe and some .PK4 files. Those PK4 files includes the entire game (sounds, videos, textures etc.) in high compressed form.
Normally those files were decompresse during the game.
But this exactly is the problem. Even new CPUs are not able to decompress those files while running the game with good peformance and therfore the game runs very **** also on new computers. I don't know if the develpers of ID-Soft was just too stupid to think about this or if they have an agreement with some hardware manufacturing firms.
How to get around this problem:
It is very simple. Go to your Doom 3 installation directoy and get inside the folder "Base". There are some .PK4 files you have to open each of them with WinRAR 3.3 and extract their entire contents to the Base dir in you Doom 3 installation folder (replace all files if they are any duplicates). Now you have to delete all .PK4 files in the Base folder to prevent the game to use those compressed files agian.
Now the game starts and runs mutch faster!!!
Have fun playing Doom 3!!!
It supposedly gives a small performance boost and improves some load times
Performance Tweaking
Before you get to tweaking, you will want to know how to benchmark the
game to get before and after results of your handiwork. So start Doom
III and bring down the console. Then type -
timedemo demo1
Wait for the demo to run and you will be presented with a screen at the
end with your frame rates. Since you will be stopping and starting Doom
III a lot, you can also bypass the beating heart machine intro by adding
-
+disconnect
to the target command line of your Doom III shortcut. To do this, right
click the shorcut and go to properties. Find the Target line and change
it accordingly. Mine reads -
"D:\Doom 3\Doom3.exe" +disconnect
If you want to see your frame rates in game, simply use -
set com_showFPS "1"
which will display your current FPS in corner of screen.
set com_videoRam "64"
Doom III has detected I have 64mb of ram on my video card. Well I
actually have 256mb, which is probably why a few other settings seem
out, hence I set it manually.
set image_downSizeBumpLimit "512" //1024 for 256mb gfx. 512 for 128 gfx. 256 for 64mb gfx
set image_downSizeBump "1" //enables above
Originally the above was set to 256, as if I had a 64mb card. What I
believe it does is decide how large in pixels the bump map textures
should be on screen. Without a performance hit I was able to use 1024
with a 256mb card. You can also try -
set image_downSizeLimit "512" //1024 for 256 cards. 512 for 128mb gfx. 256 for 64mb gfx
set image_downSize "1" //use to enable above
I've had friends say that below does work and others say it doesn't.
Give it a try but make a note of your current settings before you change
it. You can do that either by reading your DoomConfig.cfg or by typing
the command without a variable in the console.
set image_useCache "1"
set image_cacheMegs "128"
set image_cacheMinK "10240"
20 was the default Cache for me and I've had a small FPS boost by
setting it higher, although this is bound to be linked directly with
available memory so don't go too high. I'd set it between 96 and 128
depending on your system specs. Note you will need to raise the
cacheMinK as well or the game will crash before you've finished loading.
Still playing around with above but even if it doesn't raise the FPS, it
does seem to smooth out the transitions and pauses you can experience in
single player. Note that these settings are for PreCompressed textures
only, so should you be lucky enough to run in ultra mode without texture
compression, they shouldn't effect you.

You should realize two things about the .pak files. One if they save about 3 gigs of space on your HD, your welcome to unpack them but it will make the doom 3 folder around 4 gigs instead of 1.5ish. Also I have read you need the .pak files if you want to play multiplayer. I havn't tested it, but if you want to unpack the files, then move the .pak files to another folder and try online, if it works great..if it dosn't then just move the .pak files into the directory when you want to play online.

Hey dudes,
Still up at camp but Nicon and I bought doom 3 of course to play on my new DELL XPS on days off! OMGWTFPWNED!!!
But we're running into huge huge lock up issues with the ATI 9700 mobility series, and we're uber pissed since we only get about 3 hours a week to play video games.
The rest of the time we are singing songs around a camp fire.
Anyways, please answer our questions, and we shall check them in like a year because thats how often we get days off (but through some huge loop hole, we still manage to get paid our 74 cents an hour, EVEN ON OUR DAYS OFF!!! Omg! Us > Minimum wage!). Kthx

Love the game. Hope some good mods come out for it soon, the multiplayer has so much more potential. Glad they released the source w/ it so there'll be some really good mods shortly I'm sure.

I just got to alpha labs just now on marine :P imps still make me jump but atleast its getting easier to not shit my pants ever five seconds. I tried vetern but the first shotgun guy killed me so i turned it down a notch ;/. Graphics are great and gameplay is pretty spooky (especially voices/breathing in the background).

I liked Doom II better. I find Doom III to be a repetitive bore. Like some people have already said though, I'm looking foward to a good multiplayer mod and some maps. The graphics engine looks top notch and runs smooth.
