So disappointing...
I got in all my parts yesterday and spent like 6 hours getting it put together. It turned on and booted up fine, I even got windows installed and everything worked fine (except my ethernet drivers).
My HD was sata and my cdrom was IDE so it was being weird with the master/slave thing so this morning I hooked up my cd rom to a different IDE port and then the computer wouldn't turn back on. The power button does nothing and and turning on the power via the switch on the back just makes the fan lights come on and spin for like 1 second then it all goes off.
I'm not sure if it's motherboard or power supply problem so I unplugged everything except the mobo power and it still wouldn't start up, so I'm sending it back. I hope it isn't the power supply that is gay.
Oh well, guess I can wait another week,

Anyone know something I can try to maybe get it working without having to send it back? Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Well first I would test the Power Supply by using a paper clip to connect the green line to one of the black ground lines. You just need to complete the circuit for a second and the PSU should click on. Make sure your Clear CMOS jumper on the mobo is not set int he reset position. If PC won't even turn on you may have chipped your Proccessor while moving stuff around, but with P4 that is less likely. Make sure your AGP and all PCI cards are seated completely (though this normally just keeps board from posting not from powering up). If you can't get your ATX PSU to click on using the paper clip method open it up and see if the fuse is blown (I have never had this happen, most of the time a capacitor is fubar).
Oh, also make sure it's plugged in, and you turned the back of the PSU to | not 0.

I reset the CMOS, left the battery out for a while and jumped it with a paper clip. After that it would turn on for a few seconds. After plugging in the HD, CDrom, ram, etc in it will run for like 45 seconds and shut off. I plugged in an old monitor to see what was wrong and it said CMOS checksum error.
I looked this up on google and the causes were:
Bad or old CMOS battery.
BIOS update.
Disconnecting power from computer without shutting down computer
It said I could load defaults and stuff into BIOS and it should boot up normally. I loaded my defaults and it shutoff right after I saved. I loaded up again and just checked PC health status out of curiosity and it said my CPU was running at 98 freakin degrees celcius.
Thats like boiling point, seems way to hot to be that right when it turns on. I do have my CPU and case fans installed correctly so I'm not sure what the problem is. Going to call a local shop tomorrow and ask what the dealio is

It's weird.. It really didn't seem that hot though. Like sticking my hand near it. Googled the error and it said it can be fixed my loading the defaults and putting in a new battery.. guess I'll go to the shops in town tomorrow trying to fix it.

Ya, sounds like your BIOS may be detecting the CPU temp wrong and auto-shutting down your PC. 98 is very high, generally your bios will shut down a CPU running over 75-80 to protect the machine, target temps are like 60, atleast this is where AMD's run. Or maybe your CPU heatsink isn't flush witht he processor, not sure how P4's work int hat regard, you used thermal paste too right? If the heatsink isn't getting hot at all I would also suspect it's not coming into contact with the CPU, even if the PC's on for a few seconds it should be a bit warm.

Ya I know the VidCard isn't the best, but their target price was 500$, I went AMD64 because they want this PC to last eight years like their last one.

Most P4 chips need a strong fan esp if its hyper threading. It could be that your fan just isn't strong enough. You didn't just throw on your old fan from your old CPU did you? Also make sure that you fan is plugged into the right fan slot on your mother board. Mine has like 10 fan plugs. 3 in the back 2 in the front and 1 for my P4 HT chip. Im also running a Sata drive but only one HD, a 8mb 10k rpm sata drive. Does your board support these drives? If so make sure that you have the right settings for your HD and also another thing to look at is your RAID drives. Makes sure you have it turn on if you are running two HD's. If not turn it off. You might want to try both setting to make sure its compatable.

Got my comp to run again this morning. Unplugged it and brought it into my room and what do ya know, it starts up and then dies.
I took it to a local comp shop hoping I wouldn't be charged an arm and a leg. The guy plugged in a new power supply and stuff for free and we determined it was either the cpu or mobo.
I'm just sending both back to newegg for replacements, hopefully I'll have better luck in
